- Uses statistics and analytical tools to identify patterns and trends.
- Builds dashboards, graphs and reports using tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau or similar platforms.
- Explains findings clearly and recommends practical next steps.

Data analysis can suit someone who is curious, logical and attentive to detail. It is not only about numbers. Analysts must ask good questions, understand the business problem and communicate findings to people who may not have a technical background.
Helpful school subjects
Mathematics is particularly valuable. Information Technology, Computer Applications Technology, Business Studies, Accounting, Economics and languages can also help develop technical, commercial and communication skills. Admission requirements vary by qualification and institution.
Study and development routes
Common study routes include statistics, data science, computer science, information systems, business analytics, economics, finance or mathematics. A diploma or degree can be supported by practical training in spreadsheets, SQL, data visualisation and basic programming. Build a portfolio using public or self-created datasets and explain the question, method, visualisation and conclusion for each project.

Analytical skills are used in banking, insurance, retail, telecommunications, healthcare, consulting, manufacturing and the public sector.
